The Muslims Games is scheduled to take place between July 30th and August 2nd in Burnaby at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex and the Bonsor Recreation Center. There will be two divisions - one for teams and one for individuals. The sports that will be offered for the teams division include basketball (minimum of 3 players per team), volleyball (minimum of 6 players per team), badminton (doubles) and soccer (minimum of 14 players per team).
Cricket was also being offered but there was little interest; however, if we can get a minimum of 4 teams of 7 players, we will include it as part of the games. The individuals division includes ping pong, tennis, swimming, and track & field (100 m and 400 m races). Individuals are only allowed to register for one event/sport and the registration fee is $25 per individual (to a max. of $300 per team). The $25 fee will be used to help cover the facility rental fees for the tournament and will also be used to pay for the athlete prize packages. For each team sport, the top 3 teams will receive:
1st Place - Large team trophy, medallions for each of the players, team name placed on a "victor’s plaque"
2nd Place - Team trophy, medallions for each of the players
3rd Place - Team trophy, medallions for each of the players
There will also be pizza, drinks and some other foods that will be offered to the athletes during the games. The registration fee can be paid online (http://www.muslimgames.org) through Paypal or you can mail or drop off cheques/cash to the Muslim School of BC (12300 Blundell Road, Richmond BC, V6W 1B3). You can also contact me via email (keh4@sfu.ca) or phone (778.990.2385) and I can drop off the money for you.
Registration will be open until July 17th.
We are hoping that the games will be a success in its inaugural year and inshallah it will become an annual event. If the event were to start today, we would have to cancel most of the sports because we do not have enough registrants. Therefore, if any of you are interested in particpating, please register asap so we can start putting together schedules and begin to turn this tournament into a success!
