The BCMA is currently the largest Muslim organization in the province representing 75,000 to 80,000 Sunni Muslims. The Muslims in British Columbia are experiencing exponential growth, from a population of 10,000 in 1980 to 75,000+ today. In 1980, there was only one location for Friday prayers in all of Vancouver and its surrounding suburbs. Today there are over fifteen locations for Friday prayers in the Greater Vancouver area alone, not including centers in the outlying areas such as Kelowna, Nanaimo, Abbotsford, Prince George and Victoria.

Coastline Marriage and Family Counselling is a new service finally available to BC’s growing Muslim community. An estimated 65,000 Muslims, mostly families, call British Columbia home. While much is made about the high level of education and standard of living enjoyed by BC’s Muslim community, the family experience has, and continues to be, one of moral disintegration: high rates of divorce, innumerable cases of domestic violence, neglect of the elderly, and perhaps most importantly, an ever-increasing gap between early immigrant Muslims who came to Canada and their Canadian-born children who are faced with the challenge of growing up and living in a culture drastically different from that of their parents.
